Water Leak Detection in Sydney
Water leakages are a significant source of water waste for many households and can cause substantial damage to your property along with high water bills if the underlying cause isn’t detected early. Unfortunately, many leaks go undetected for years due to instances where the source of the leak is not visible such as leaking pipes underground, which are more common than you may expect. Therefore, if you have yet to search your home for any leaking pipes, we advise you to do so as soon as possible. If you notice or suspect any leakage within your property, contact Torino’s Plumbing Solutions, and we will undertake water leak repair work right away.
What Causes Underground Water Leaks?
There are a variety of elements that can lead to underground water leaks. The two most discussed causes include water or soil chemicals and soil movement. Some chemicals found in water or soil can cause pipes to erode, leading to cracks and/or holes to form and allowing leakage to occur. As for soil movement, if the ground below begins to shift, it can place a high amount of pressure on pipes. Eventually, the pipes will crack and the resulting leakage will mix with the soil to create further ground movement. This can be extremely unsafe as it can pose a huge threat to the structural integrity of your property.
How Can I Detect Water Leakages Beneath My House?
There are a few ways to determine whether water leakage is present beneath your house. This includes checking the water meter before and after turning off all faucets, toilets and appliances connected to the main water supply, by checking your water bills and by way of using senses including sight and smell. These are discussed in further detail below.
A water meter is an important tool that you can use to indicate whether there is an underground leakage present within your property. First, check your water meter and note how it moves. Then turn off every faucet, toilet, and the appliance connected to water within the property (such as the washing machine). Check the water meter again and note any changes, repeat this step after half an hour has passed. If the water meter shows an increase in value or any movement within the second and third checks, it’s likely there is a leak somewhere within the property and it could be underground.
Check your water bill regularly to determine if there is leakage below your property. If your water bill shows an unexplainable increase in water usage, it’s likely there is a leaking pipe present.
Use your senses to determine if a pipe is leaking beneath your property. Visually inspect your property focusing on spotting random pools of water, lush spots within the yard and mould growing in your house. Also, use your sense of smell as a musty scent is associated with underground leakage.
